Whereas other chiropractors treat only one area of the body — the back — Dr. JoAnna Fasulo of Fasulo Chiropractic in Patchogue treats the entire body from the inside out. She believes that whatever the body has created, the body can cure, and she will work tirelessly to find the culprit of her patient’s ill health.
Dr. Fasulo, who has operated her own practice since 1994, is not only a licensed chiropractor, but also a certified applied kinesiologist. “[Kinesiology] is an in-depth study of analyzing a patient’s health status using traditional means like blood tests and x-rays but also incorporating less traditional means of analysis, specifically muscle testing, cranial sacral therapy, custom nutritional analysis and more.”
She continued to explain that “muscle testing is a diagnostic tool used to ‘see’ what stressors are affecting a patient, resulting in their symptomatology”. For example, Dr. Fasulo explains how she can often help patients with a disease called fibromyalgia (a painful muscle disorder) by analyzing what their body needs using muscle testing. “The testing can determine which spinal bones are misaligned and which cranial bones are misaligned and even if a nutritional deficiency can be causing their ill health,” she said. “Any of these problems cause stress on the body, causing it to literally malfunction. Once I find the causes of the malfunction, I can treat it holistically.”
Dr. Fasulo explains that her job as a chiropractor and a holistic health care practitioner is to try and find the cause of the body’s health problems instead of trying to cover up or mask the symptoms. She uses this analogy. “Much of health care today (western medicine) is treating patients similar to how the town treats potholes: don’t fix them, just patch them up and see how long they will last before the next pothole (symptom) shows up, then we can patch them up again.” This is an ideal way to insure a patient’s health will continue to deteriorate simply because the cause of the problem is not ever being addressed. In other words, the pothole will return in either the original location or another location on the same street, if, at some point, you do not fix what is causing the potholes. In other words: Fix the cause of the problem!
Nutritional counseling is a very big part of Dr. Fasulo’s practice. She explains that she recommends only “whole food supplements” as opposed to synthetic vitamins. She continues to explain that “whole food supplements come from a real live food source that the body recognizes as a natural substance which does not cause stress on the digestive system.” However, a synthetic vitamin (i.e., store bought vitamins) are made in a laboratory that manufactures them and are usually not made from a whole food source. For example, most store-bought multivitamins are made up of synthetic vitamins which the body does not recognize as a food source. The multivitamin that Dr. Fasulo recommends is made from food like wheat germ (Vitamin E), carrots (Vitamin A), etc. Therefore, the body sees the food and uses the vitamins from the food source, a much healthier way, in her opinion, to take vitamins.
To educate people about taking better care of their bodies, Dr. Fasulo offers two purification/detoxification seminars a year at her office. These seminars teach those in attendance how to purify their liver, colon and kidneys with a responsible detoxification program that can cleanse their systems and improve their health. Those who have participated in the past, according to Dr. Fasulo, have lost weight, had more energy, lowered their bad cholesterol and improved their blood sugar.
The next seminar takes place on Wednesday, October 29 at 7 p.m., and it is free to the public.
Dr. Fasulo has been interested in chiropractic since she was about 8 years old. Her interest began as a child who suffered with epileptic seizures and was in and out of North Shore Hospital in Manhasset as well as living on multiple anti-seizure medications. Her parents decided to take her to a chiropractor after friends of theirs recommended one in their area who had worked with other epileptic children. After only a few chiropractic spinal adjustments, her seizures finally stopped occurring. At that point, Dr. Fasulo knew that chiropractic was her life’s passion.
She obtained her undergraduate degree in biology at Marywood University in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and then attended Life College of Chiropractic in Marietta, Georgia. She graduated in 1990 and returned to her native Long Island to begin her career.
Over the years, she has transformed her practice on Route 112 in North Patchogue from a chiropractic-only, small 1,200-square-foot location to a beautiful and intimate 2,400-square-foot location, where she offers not only chiropractic, but massage therapy, nutritional counseling, reiki, reflexology, yoga classes and much more. She is happy to say that the Patchogue- Medford community has been very good to her and she is always happy to help the members of this community restore their health.
In addition, she is dedicated to helping those with or without health insurance. “My door is always open to people who are truly committed to wanting to restore their health,” she said. “I can always find ways to work with them financially so they can afford care at this office, and no one in my community will suffer if they are ready to make a change in their health.”
