Keegan & Keegan, Ross & Rosner Celebrates 30 Years PDF Print E-mail

October 17, 2008
by Hank Russell, Patchogue Medford News

Although the law firm of Keegan & Keegan, Ross & Rosner, LLP has been around since 1978, the Keegan name has been in the legal field for more than half a century. In the 1950s, Thomas Keegan, Sr. created his own practice. Upon graduation from St. John’s University School of Law, Thomas Keegan, Jr. joined his father’s practice as a partner.

Keegan & Keegan, Ross & Rosner is a general law practice based in Patchogue specializing in personal injury and medical malpractice, business law, real estate, municipal, criminal, matrimonial and family court matters.

“We represent people who are injured in car accidents, conduct environmental toxin studies and determine if a product has been defective,” said Thomas Keegan, Jr., the firm’s senior partner. “We’ve always done a real estate practice. We buy and sell off real estate and businesses. We also handle wills and estates. A lot of litigation is done in Surrogate Court where people dispute wills.”

The firm also consists of Daniel C. Ross and Jamie G. Rosner. Ross, who works out of the firm’s Mattituck office, joined the firm in 1982, the same year he was admitted to the New York State Bar. He handles cases at the Supreme Court in Riverhead. Rosner, a 2000 graduate of St. John’s University Law School, joined the firm shortly after graduation. In 2004, he was named partner. Working in the Patchogue office, Rosner focuses primarily on personal injury, commercial litigation, collection, real estate and criminal cases.

Most of the work that the attorneys do is litigation for other lawyers. “A lot of lawyers don’t want to go in court,” Keegan said. “So we get hired by [the other lawyers] to go out to court.”

With the recent financial activity that has resulted in job losses, companies closing their doors and homeowners facing foreclosure, it could be assumed that this would be a boon for law firms dealing in real estate matters, but Keegan said that is not the case. “There’s very little [business in the real estate field],” he said. “The real estate market is really dead and nothing’s going to happen until everything gets straightened out.”

Aside from his legal practice, Keegan has been involved in the community. He served as president of the Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce and president of the Greater Patchogue Foundation. He also served as president of Kiwanis International’s Patchogue Club and lieutenant governor of the Suffolk East division of the New York district. Last night, Keegan was the honoree at the Chamber of Commerce’s installation dinner.

While some law firms help Spanish-speaking clients, Keegan said, he is fluent in Spanish, meaning he does not have to hire an outside interpreter. What also differentiates his firm from other firms is that they just don’t rely solely on legal expertise to try a case, but they do their own forensic research.

“We do our own scientific work,” Keegan said, adding that he has a staff of “about a dozen people” working on such cases. “We look at the medicines, and do the construction of the accident [scene]. We also examine the physics of what caused the accident. A lot of lawyers don’t go deep enough. They rely on their [legal] expertise.”

Most of the people who go to Keegan & Keegan, Ross & Rosner look to the firm as their last hope, according to Keegan. “We take on difficult cases,” he said. “A lot of people come to us saying, ‘I’ve gone to other lawyers and said that I don’t have a case.’ … If we say we got the goods and we stick with it if we’ve taken a position in the case, we’ll take it all the way to trial and get the medical evidence we need to prove it. … We then get an award for the injury. Most lawyers [who see the case] say, ‘No, thanks.’”

Keegan & Keegan, Ross & Rosner are open six days a week, “seven, if the need arises,” said Keegan. “If that is what it takes to get the job done.” If you call the firm, “you’ll get a person more often than any other law firm,” he said. “We’re just very happy and proud to be here a long time.”
