Getting flowers may be sweet, but getting uniquely designed chocolate-covered fruits from Edible Arrangements is even sweeter. The concept of this store is to put a twist on the floral arrangements by using pieces of fruit instead of flowers.
Edible Arrangements has been at its Medford location for the past year and a half under the ownership of Dianne Grub (right), and Susan George (left). “A friend of ours opened a location, and we got the idea from her,” Grub said.
Grub said all the fruits come from a local produce supplier. “All of our fruit is cut fresh daily, and all the arrangements are made to order,” she said. The chocolate used to cover the fruit is gourmet chocolate, “We can add chocolate to the strawberries, apples, oranges, pineapple, or our double dipped banana’s (1/2 dark, ½ white chocolate); you can also add coconut, almonds (crushed or sliced) or cinnamon chips to the chocolate covered fruit. We also offer Stuffed Teddy bears, balloons or our own fudge, (which comes in regular or sugar free) to complete that special gift,” she said.
In addition, Grub said, some of the containers are specially designed to accommodate the customer’s request. “Some of the containers [holding the arrangement] are packaged in a sports theme, a baby shower theme, Holiday theme or Children’s theme.”
With a staff of six people taking orders, creating the displays and delivering them to their destinations, the turnaround time is prompt, according to George. “We can fulfill your orders that [same] day,’ she said.
Edible Arrangements has also done weddings, showers, engagement and birthday parties, with the arrangements being used as the centerpiece or one extra large arrangement to serve as the focal point on the dessert table.
Of all the days in the year, the busiest day is obviously Valentine’s Day, George said. When asked if they ever received any unique request, Grub replied; “We get all types of interesting request, but the most popular is to have the delivery sent from a secret admirer, the recipient calls, but we can’t tell the recipients who or where it’s from, that is the customers request.” she said.
There have been times, Grub said, when people asked that specific fruits not be included in the arrangements, citing allergies, dietary needs or just a personal preference. “We do have some people say to us, ‘No strawberries,’” she said. “Some people don’t like melons. Depending in their likes or dislikes, we do our best accommodate them.”
Edible Arrangements in Medford is one of 14 locations throughout Long Island, and each franchise is individually owned. Orders can either be picked up or delivered.
“It’s a lot of fun to do,” said Grub. “This is the first time I ever owned a business. Everybody here works together as a team.”
